What an entertaining read! Was in a little bit of a reading slump and this book pulled me right out.
I think the ending was controversial to some but I kinda loved it. Excited to see where Lauren Roberts takes us next. This book was more “roughing it” so maybe the next book will show a more polished pae…
I think she could have been a little more descriptive in the world building because I did have trouble visualizing the new locations. however Robert’s does an excellent job with the dialogue. I find these characters lovable and you tend to justify their flaws because of it.
I think for its time, the themes in this book were groundbreaking. Through the lens of today, I’ve read better books discussing the coping mechanisms of PTSD post war. In general I find it hard to care about characters that are so unlovable… but I think that’s the point? All you want is for Jake to pull himself out of this vicious cycle, but in the end he ends up where he started and it just breaks your heart a little..
Also, this was a reread and the first time I read it was in high school… oh my god I cannot believe that they let us read this in school🙈 no wonder I had such a hard time reading it because I literally didn’t know what all these terms were for drinking and sex lol😅. Plus this book does contain two different slurs.
To preface, I read this after crown of midnight and I stand by that decision. I felt like since celaena is moving to a different location for the next book, I figured it would be a good break before we continue on with her story.
And when I say “break” I mean absolutely break me as a person😅. It just beautifully wraps up all the questions you have about why celaena is the way that she is. She is not lovable in this book (kind of a spoiled little brat imo) but I think that’s the point. She thinks that she is this invincible assassin but she is not and the people who once cared for her are ultimately villains in her story. So now thinking back to TOG we see why this character is untrusting and recluse. It’s why she doesn’t want to care for people. It’s also why she has to constantly tell herself to not be afraid even though she’s this elite assassin that has probably experienced much worse
I usually don’t like novellas but I absolutely loved the short story format for these. Each one I feel focused on a trait of celaena that she developed or learned, culminating to her ultimate demise in the conclusion. Personally my favorite was the assasin and the desert😊
Excellent book. The writing was very well done and I loved the multiple POVs and timeline jumping. Felt like you were putting a puzzle piece together when reading through. The ending was the perfect conclusion. It really makes you think about how villains can do the right thing and good people can be villains.
Wow. Lauren Roberts has managed to obliterate my heart. I felt like I didn’t buy in to Adena’s character while reading Powerless just because they didn’t talk about her much. Now I feel like I need to go back and reread powerless so I can rightfully be pissed for Adena. I usually don’t like novellas but this one is absolute chef’s kiss and has me heated for reckless! I NEED REVENGE!!!
Oh wow. This book was absolutely devastating. Kristin Hannah did a good job illustrating the horrors of war in a multifaceted way. The only reason I wouldn’t give it five stars is because I felt at some point she was just thinking of every terrible thing you can do to a human and wrote it in. The experiences she had during her tour to Vietnam would be enough to further the plot.
I very much enjoyed this book. Just to warn you to NOT look at the family tree in the back unless you want to spoil the ending.. but other than that I thought the world was super unique and not too hard to follow. Glossary at the back definitely helped fill in the blanks when needed. I’m excited to see more of raeve’s history uncover in the next book because I still feel like there is so much we don’t know!😩
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
4.0
What a unique fantasy novel! I overall have enjoyed this series and it was refreshing to have fantasy that didn’t include traditional magic, high fae or dragons. I loved the elspeth perspective in this book and really getting to dive more into the complicated nightmare/elspeth relationship. It was also super satisfying having the ending feel so resolved but not in any way cheesy. Excellent read!
