Oh wow…
To preface, I read this after crown of midnight and I stand by that decision. I felt like since celaena is moving to a different location for the next book, I figured it would be a good break before we continue on with her story.
And when I say “break” I mean absolutely break me as a person😅. It just beautifully wraps up all the questions you have about why celaena is the way that she is. She is not lovable in this book (kind of a spoiled little brat imo) but I think that’s the point. She thinks that she is this invincible assassin but she is not and the people who once cared for her are ultimately villains in her story. So now thinking back to TOG we see why this character is untrusting and recluse. It’s why she doesn’t want to care for people. It’s also why she has to constantly tell herself to not be afraid even though she’s this elite assassin that has probably experienced much worse
I usually don’t like novellas but I absolutely loved the short story format for these. Each one I feel focused on a trait of celaena that she developed or learned, culminating to her ultimate demise in the conclusion. Personally my favorite was the assasin and the desert😊
