I had a lot of fun with this book. It was less stressful of a read and I'm just excited to see where it goes.

Long running urban fantasy series remind me of TV shows. Each book is an individual adventure, and there may be a little character development or relationship status change to mix things up. I guess you have to either really care about the characters or enjoy a generic whodunit. I know at one point I thought the characters in this series were great, but now they could be from any urban fantasy series out there. What drew me to the series no longer applies and I don't see anything here that sets this apart. I assume at some point the big bad will have to be confronted again, until then the gang will tackle one paranormal threat after another, and I'm not sure how much I really care anymore.

This is a solidly enjoyable series, and the authors are clearly seriously trying to aim for more diversity in their books, which I applaud them for. It is a little bit clumsy sometimes but they are doing a good job! Leaps and bounds from when Andrea (white, blonde) described Kate (white, mostly, at the time) as being super exotic-looking and potentially able to pass as any number of racial groups, which was weird and uncomfortable.
But the plot! Yes, this was kind of "monster of the week," but also it was fun to get back into the trenches with Kate before she became Consort and things got so darn political. I look forward to seeing more of her going head to head with the Order as well, and it's pretty clear that we're headed (eventually) for a final confrontation with the BIG Big Bad, which I look forward to reading about.

Nine books in, the series finds its footing (!)
Kate Daniels, detective, actually has a case for the first time. The urban fantasy has settled down more or less to a set of consistent rules, the Beauty & the Beast romance angle has calmed down, and most importantly it finds its humor and found family banter.

My "summer" Kate never disappoints me, so this time we have George, her missing boyfriend Edoardo, the Guild, three giants, the knights, Roland of course and a dijinn, a full optional book with a lot of stories and packed up with adventure. Lovely.
Delizioso

Seriously packed with action. I liked that Kate actually gets really hurt in this one. It shows she’s a little more human than in previous books, more relatable. And I love her back and forth with Curran.
