Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews
3.0
This is a solidly enjoyable series, and the authors are clearly seriously trying to aim for more diversity in their books, which I applaud them for. It is a little bit clumsy sometimes but they are doing a good job! Leaps and bounds from when Andrea (white, blonde) described Kate (white, mostly, at the time) as being super exotic-looking and potentially able to pass as any number of racial groups, which was weird and uncomfortable.
But the plot! Yes, this was kind of "monster of the week," but also it was fun to get back into the trenches with Kate before she became Consort and things got so darn political. I look forward to seeing more of her going head to head with the Order as well, and it's pretty clear that we're headed (eventually) for a final confrontation with the BIG Big Bad, which I look forward to reading about.
