Midnight on the River Grey is a gothic romance with plenty of mystery and suspense, not to mention misunderstandings. Working out all the intricacies of those details is what forms the plot of this intriguing story. Gothic novels aren't what i would choose to read as regular fare but this one was fun for something different.

I would have given it 4 stars but there are quite a lot of similarities between this book and Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey and that was a bit disappointing.
All in all a fast, good read, with an unexpected result to the murder mystery.

I listened to the Audiobook of this. I really enjoy the narrator.
'After her brother's mysterious death. Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible - Mr Lewis Browning - known as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new
guardian.'.......................
This premise pulled me in. I really felt for Rebecca, it felt like she had lost almost everyone she
cared about. The Story had lots of twists and turns. 1 minute I disliked Lewis and the next I liked him. I kept going back and forth as to whether or not I thought he was the killer or not. The suspense kept brewing until very near the end. The supporting characters were good too, but I especially loved Rebecca's Aunt, I felt she was like a substitute mother to Rebecca. A Real Gothic mystery set in an old manor house. Just my kind of story.
I took a star off though, due to the fact that there is not much Christian content in this Author's books. It is there but very subtle.

2:02 am. This is the exact time I finished Abigail Wilson’s sophomore novel Midnight on the River Grey. And coming from a woman who prizes her sleep just as much as her dark chocolate, this is a huge credit to the author. But seriously, this novel! With its engaging plot, heart-sighing romance, and hard-to-guess mystery, I’m going to be in a story-fog for quite some time!
From the first page, the heroine, Rebecca, impressed me with her grit. Her brother Jacob’s mysterious death ignited a desire within her to discover the truth at all costs. Her drive and determination are admirable but what I adored most about her was her kind yet discerning heart. She’d experienced so much pain within her lifetime, but refused to be discouraged. On top of everything else, the man the entire town suspected to be bear the blame of her brother’s death is also the one she needed the most to help navigate the hazy situations that arisen during her stay in the country.
Mr. Browning is shrouded in secrets, and while his guarded nature makes me curious about his involvement in Jacob’s passing, I can’t help but like the man. He treats Rebecca with admiration and respect while giving her space to be herself on his large estate.
The romance in this story is organic and unforced which are crucial elements for me when reading novels. And while I LOVE this time period, I’m a huge fan of this author’s storytelling. Her voice is unique and fresh. I’m so glad Abigail Wilson stepped onto the regency era scene, and I can’t wait for her next story.
*I received a copy from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Good story. Gets better towards the end with the elements of the espionage subplot. Plenty of twists and turns, intrigue and an underlying love story.
Recommended for lovers of Regency Fiction with a twist.
I did not receive this story from Netgalley. I purchased the ebook myself when it was on sale.

I think this is one of those "right book at the right time" kind of moments. I really enjoyed this. It was an easy read and the plot was fairly predictable but I still found myself caught up in the story. Maybe it was the slight gothic vibes.. maybe it was the fact that the "sleuthing" that happened throughout the story felt both natural and plausible.. Maybe it's just that I've been sick and needed something low-key. I don't know. But I liked it.
