(2019) This is the first Abigail Wilson book I've ever read and I think she is going to be a favorite author!

(2022) Second time around and I was just as enraptured as at the first! Abigail Wilson is such a master of mystery & intrigue, while still adding in just the perfect amount of romance - enough to make it swoon-worthy, but not so much that it takes away from the mystery. She's so talented! If you like anything mystery, regency, or romantic this book will by no means disappoint!!

I really enjoyed this gothic regency romance. It gripped me from the very beginning, completely immersing me in the story, and never let go.

The characters were great. Lewis had me so intrigued. He had such a horrible reputation. The townspeople avoided him at all costs, yet he was so sweet and charming whenever he appeared on the page. Were the rumors about him true? I was very curious about where that bad reputation came from.

Rebecca was feisty, courageous, and stubborn. I will say that there were a few times I got really frustrated with her, though. She'd stubbornly not listen to the wise advice from those around her and would actually do the exact opposite, which, inevitably, led to her finding herself in dangerous situations. I wanted to shake some sense into her sometimes.

My favorite characters were probably Aunt Jo and Sophie. Aunt Jo was loving and such a great companion and Sophie was pretty much the best kind of dog you could ask for.

This first book I've read by Abigail Wilson certainly won't be my last. I'm very much looking forward to reading more from her. If you're a fan of mystery-filled historical romances that feature a slow-building romance, I highly recommend this novel.

This was so good! Like the other books I’ve read by Abigail Wilson, it was incredibly atmospheric. Since this one is set during fall, November was the perfect month to read it. It was mysterious and cozy. The romance was also really sweet. I just really enjoy Abigail Wilson’s writing style!

A few month ago, I had the pleasure of reading a previous book by Abigail Wilson, In the Shadow of Croft Towers. As historical fiction, it was quite a departure from the more contemporary novels I usually enjoy, but really opened my eyes up to a genre that I had otherwise not given much mind to. Since then, I have not only opened my eyes more to that genre, but found myself really coming to enjoy it- especially those that offered a little mystery and suspense. So, when I saw that Abigail had this new book out, I could not wait to get my hands on it. And I have to say Midnight on the River Grey most certainly did NOT disappoint.

Much as I had enjoyed in the previous book, this one had me wondering what was going to happen at every turn of the page. Just when it seems as though you've got it all figured out, another twist is thrown into the mix and you find yourself once again questioning how it all will end. Being a big fan of the suspense genre, I've gotten pretty good and figuring these things out...but this one still had me guessing and I loved it. Who can we trust? Who will turn out to be the bad guy? How does it all fit together? I couldn't put it down, trying to answer these questions and more. While I cannot offer any spoilers, I will say that the story certainly had a way of keeping the reader captivated!

Abigail Wilson also writes in a way that truly does transport us back to a time that is so far removed from the modern life we know so well quite beautifully. Though I know little of the period and society in which this novel takes place, I found myself transported there nonetheless. That to me is the sign of a great book- one that can really take you away and allow you to see, hear, touch and experience the people and places we meet along the way. As much as I looked forward to seeing how it all came together, I also didn't want it to end.

If you love historical fiction already, Midnight on the River is an absolute must read. If you love a good mystery but have steered clear from historical reads, I urge you to give this one a chance. I think you'll find like me that you will be pleasantly surprised!

**I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

It has been a bit since I've read a Regency romance that felt like it was so much written for me and I'm obsessed with it. Like, all my favorite tropes are here and I was giggling so often. There were a few twists that got genuine gasps from me, and while I don't know that I'd recommend it to everyone, I had a fabulous time, and I'm so glad it's on my shelves. 5 stars from me!

The best of the 3 in the series for me. Now I know all the simultaneous POVs and events going on in the background of the other 2 novels! I say this is the best because it feels like the most well-written and complete among the 3 novels. The heroine here is more level-headed and the hero less dramatic or broody (it’s become such a common thing in regency novels). It was also written an a way that makes it incredibly easy to understand the reasons behind their actions, fears, and motivations. I also like how the author approached the villain in this one; like how she revealed his mental state when it was finally explained WHY he was doing the things he was doing. Again, there is some predictability to these books, but you only need to allow yourself to ride the wave and you’ll find a lot of enjoyment!

All mystery and extremely little romance. The main character was overconfident yet very naive about the world and kept racing into dangerous and inappropriate situations. I didn’t guess the ending of the mystery which was a plus but overall this book left me dissatisfied.

2.5*s. Entirely too long - could have easily be half the length with no loss to the plot or characterizations. It's also way too self-indulgent in the gothic-ness of it. To the point that I got bored with it and almost abandoned it a few times.
The plot is also unnecessarily convoluted.
