Midnight on the River Grey by Abigail Wilson
5.0
2:02 am. This is the exact time I finished Abigail Wilson’s sophomore novel Midnight on the River Grey. And coming from a woman who prizes her sleep just as much as her dark chocolate, this is a huge credit to the author. But seriously, this novel! With its engaging plot, heart-sighing romance, and hard-to-guess mystery, I’m going to be in a story-fog for quite some time!
From the first page, the heroine, Rebecca, impressed me with her grit. Her brother Jacob’s mysterious death ignited a desire within her to discover the truth at all costs. Her drive and determination are admirable but what I adored most about her was her kind yet discerning heart. She’d experienced so much pain within her lifetime, but refused to be discouraged. On top of everything else, the man the entire town suspected to be bear the blame of her brother’s death is also the one she needed the most to help navigate the hazy situations that arisen during her stay in the country.
Mr. Browning is shrouded in secrets, and while his guarded nature makes me curious about his involvement in Jacob’s passing, I can’t help but like the man. He treats Rebecca with admiration and respect while giving her space to be herself on his large estate.
The romance in this story is organic and unforced which are crucial elements for me when reading novels. And while I LOVE this time period, I’m a huge fan of this author’s storytelling. Her voice is unique and fresh. I’m so glad Abigail Wilson stepped onto the regency era scene, and I can’t wait for her next story.
*I received a copy from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
