This is the first book I can remember my mother reading to me as a small child.
When I was growing up I read the entire series over and over. We visited the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home in Missouri. I have a LIW charm on my childhood charm bracelet. These books loomed large in our house during my formative years.
I'm not sure what, but recently something prompted me to find a copy to re-read as an adult.
There was much trepidation.
But it holds up. It definitely holds up.

It was fine. I feel like I would’ve enjoyed it when I was younger

I read this book multiple times as a child, I loved it then. While rereading it I came across passages that were still vivid in my brain even decades later because of the imagery it conjured for me as a kid. So I still did enjoy it, but it is very obviously geared towards children. Which is fine, just harder for me to be interested in as an adult. It is also based on her life (so, autobiographical to an extent) and therefore doesn't have much of a plot which was the main issue I had upon rereading.

Rereading through this series with my kids during the Corona Virus-19 home days had me connecting with the story in a new way. I had forgotten about Laura and her family visiting town for the first time as kids. Granted, the seclusion we feel while stuck in our homes is different than what the Ingalls were used to but we have much to he grateful for. Reading through the way food was hunted, prepared, stored and eaten was interesting. I don't remember those scenes being discriptive before. Anyway, thankful for what my family and I have while we are tucked away in our homes and glad we can be in our yards away from bears and wolves as well.

Perfect audiobook for our road trip this summer. I loved sharing it with my four year old in its entirety, and am looking forward to rereading it as a readaloud. We’ve previously read some of the My First Little House Books series adapted from the original chapter books, and he loves them too.

I feel awful that we didn't finish this one. I loved this book - and the entire series - when I was younger. But from the first chapter, over six weeks ago, I knew this one was going to draaag. I didn't remember the in-depth detail about building a smokehouse, or slaughtering pigs, or storing meat. I tried my best to make it exciting for my boys, I even brought up pictures on the internet so they could try to visualize a log cabin, a smokehouse, etc. But they were just too young. At 4/5, they don't have the world knowledge to understand this book, and it isn't written in a way to grab their attention. I fully intend to try again when they are older. But for now it's going on a shelf and we'll get back to things they are excited to read.

Revisiting this series with my daughter and it's just as wonderful as it was when I was little. :)

Reading this as an adult is such a different experience, but there are ways in which it hasn't changed. This book is so charming, and I think it translates to all ages. Of course, I'm emotionally attached to this book because it was my first, real, read-all-on-my-own, chapter book when I was 5. But I really think it is such a special collection of stories and vignettes which capture a a child's daily life in a really lovely way.
