Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson

Absolutely stunning. This was previously a soft DNF because I couldn't focus on the beautiful but dense language. I'm so glad I came back to it because this was just incredible. I highly recommend and will likely be returning to it again and again.
The Summer Children by Dot Hutchison

I liked this one better than the second book but not quite as much as the first. The actual story was quite good but it was obnoxious when there were random Spanish words/phrases thrown in to remind the reader that our narrator is Hispanic when there weren't really any other nods to her culture except that (in this book) it encouraged abuse. I think I'd rather just not have any references to her culture included than have them be so awkwardly done and negative.

Quality? 2 stars. Enjoyment? 4 stars. This is just like a trashy Hallmark Christmas movie. It's predictable, there's nothing new or remarkable here, but it's fun. Just don't think about it too hard, like when someone goes for a hike in a blizzard or dozens of people not being able to notice the switch.
Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke

This was so much fun, with a surprising amount of heart. I did have some unanswered questions but overall this was a fun change and this funky format was refreshing.
One Day in December by Josie Silver

A solid winter read. No inexplicable fourth act breakup. A good emphasis on female friendship, though that seems to taper off. I recommend.
The Lover by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

It's odd to me that something so short can still have pacing issues. Am I just impatient while I'm trying to get through this slump? Still, there's an intriguing atmosphere and some good dialogue.
Bad Feminist: Essays by Roxane Gay

Still assembling my thoughts (and quite frankly I'm very tired) but I liked this collection on the whole. I rated each of the essays on a scale of 1-5 and my average ended up at 3.3. I would like to see an updated essay collection, of course, preferably with fewer references to Bill Cosby. But this even had an essay featuring the Hunger Games, so I'm happy.
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Obviously this series is a work of art. But there's no denying that this book suffers some significant pacing issues, especially compared to the first two. Still, Suzanne Collins did something truly stunning here.

As for the book itself, it was fun and what you'd expect for a younger YA graphic novel. Something you read and your say "nice" and promptly forgot you read it. I checked out the first three while I wait for my next hold but I'm not sure if I'll read them.

I liked the writing but I didn't click with this one. I think it's because I've been fighting a reading slump lately and I wasn't excited to pick this up. Definitely an "it's not you, it's me" situation.
