Anne Elliot is the GOAT.

I found this to be much more entertaining than Pride and Prejudice. And a very easy, quick read.

Jane Austen knows how to captivate your attention despite writing about a time period where all people really did was hang out at other people’s houses.

I did notice that the characters in this story seemed less fleshed out than in Pride and Prejudice. The Elliot’s in general were fairly two-dimensional. Anne was well-written, but not really my type of protagonist. Also, the ending and the union of Anne and Wentworth was way too rushed for me to feel the sort of attachment I do with Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

Still, I was engrossed by the story all the way through.

I read (listened to) this because the protagonist in Andrea Gillies' The Enlightenment of Nina Findley recommends it and says that it's Austen's best. I'm not entirely sure that I agree, on the other hand, it's years ago since I read another Austen. This one was only published after her death.

I liked it and the themes of gossip and expectations of women are interesting and recognisable, but I wasn't at all as taken with it as I was with Middlemarch, another English classic that I read last year. I found that Middlemarch had substantially more to say to a modern reader than Persuasion. But that could just be me.

While this book took me a while to start, I couldn't put it down as I got near the end. I felt for Anne as she realized herself and the feelings of those around her,. I loved that Austen really explores the lives of her characters, not just their romantic ones, and gives depth that is so lacking in a lot of literature. The fact that she drew attention to the lack of female authors at the time was so incredible - I yelled. Overall, a wonderful classical novel.

Wow y’all. I finished a Jane Austen book in 2 days! I couldn’t put this down!!!

I saw myself in Anne. In her calm temperament and tendency to appease all parties, in her being young and easily persuaded by the advice of others (to her own detriment). To growing up and finally realizing she needs to hold on to what makes her happy, no matter the opinions of anyone else.

I appreciated the themes of class, family, and the “roles” of people in love, including what’s considered “proper” for widowers or people who lose their loved ones in one way or another. It sparked some really interesting internal debates and monologues.

I do wish we had more moments of Anne with Captain Wentworth, and that some of the loose ends were better tied up.

Overall, a lovely book. Every time I pick up a work by Jane Austen I’m awestruck bu her poetic writing style.

This book always makes me think of Roman and the time I told him it was my favourite and so he read it the next day so we could speak about it.

It took me awhile longer to get into this book than some of Austen's other works. Still, once I got into the flow of the story I enjoyed it.
