The story of how Ella Turner from America visits France, and has strange dreams which push her to checking them out and tracing her French ancestors, with the help of a sardonic French librarian. Ella's marriage comes under some strain...

The story alternates between two women who lived a four centuries apart. There's a little mystery, mixed in with historical fiction. I thought the book sounded really interesting, but it didn't turn out as great as I thought it would be. The story was definitely interesting at parts, I just didn't like how uncaring or mean some of the characters were to each other. It felt like the book just ended without quite finishing the story.

I love Tracy Chevalier!!! I know it is not deep...intellectual stuff---and that is why it is so lovely to read...especially on a lovely day of spring. Some of the scenes are quite unlikely, but I enjoy her style.

Fine. I’m not a huge fan of historical fiction, but I liked the historical parts better than the contemporary ones. I think the author wove the mystery part of the story together well: the plot is structured nicely, even if the words themselves started to grate.

Really wish the author had written “smelled like” instead of “smelled of,” (seventeen times)(just kidding but definitely 3 or 4) which is simultaneously pretentious and also ridiculous, thanks to Monty Python.

A mildly interesting story with very good narration. I learned a bit about the Huguenots, so that was good. The modern story was more interesting to me than the one from the middle ages, which was confusing to me.

Beautiful, but disturbing. I have loved all of Tracy Chevalier's books, and I enjoyed this story but it wasn't my favourite. I think there were too many characters because most of them were very flat. I'm not entirely sure why a blue dress was crime enough to kill over, but I guess superstitions ran pretty high in that time?
