What was that? Me after I read the first few pages. I couldn’t believe what I had just read, and I knew I was in for a wild ride!

Ruby is not a sociopath, but she has killed several people and feels no remorse. Ruby is an animal loving therapist with a thriving practice in Miami. Ruby is married to Jason, who ends up dead in bed shortly after they are wed. Jason did have diabetes, but the police are hesitant to just chalk this up to an accidental natural death due to Ruby’s malicious mother in law. While Ruby isn’t innocent, she did not kill her husband. Will this be the death that takes her down and ends her killing all together?

After the initial shock of the first few pages I really got into this story. It was different enough from the other thrillers I’ve read recently and it held my interest. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next, and ultimately to find out if Ruby would get convicted of Jason’s death. I gave this 4/5 stars and recommend to those who was a fast and engaging thriller.

This is not a thriller so much as a deep psychological character study. Rothchild burrows deep in the brain of her protagonist Ruby, starting in early childhood when she drowns a little boy, and follows her into adulthood, marriage, and beyond as she builds a life around exacting Ruby-styled justice.

Ruby is a fantastic character. I didn't know if she was a straightforward, right on the money kind of gal or completely out of her mind for the majority of the book. Rothchild sure harnessed the power of point of view in this story!

If you're looking for a twisting turning shocker, this isn't it. What this book does do is raise all sorts of moral and ethical questions.

3.5 Parts of this reminded me of Dexter, as Ruby murders “with a code” It was a big of a drag in the beginning and started to pick up more towards the end. It was okay, but not a favorite

Did she or didn’t she? By the end of the book, I’m not sure. An earlier death is revealed later. Why did she sleep so soundly when her husband was in crisis?

In the best way, this was different from anything else I’ve read. It kept me on my toes which was really fun, though I had a couple of quibbles with the end, but otherwise, better than average read.

I loved this book from beginning to end. It seemed like a thriller but I feel like it wasn’t. I consider it more a character study of our messy and complicated main character, Ruby.

Enjoyable. Not a thriller or mystery though.
