Wow. I’m not usually a non-fiction girlie but this one was so good. I like how Jill approached this situation with truth and a healthy dose of nuance. We don’t know these people, we’re not as involved in their day to day lives as we feel from watching them on TV or even their social media. Her honesty and openness is admirable.

This memoir was so heartbreaking to read. Listening to the book through Jill Duggar and reading it with the photographs felt immersive and like a more in-depth documentary. Although there were points that I felt were purposefully vaguely alluded to or glossed over, like the relationship of Jill and her mom. You can feel Jill healing through the book, and it is incredibly courageous for her to share her story being under a toxic “umbrella of protection” with cult-ish undertones, through the IBLP church as well as simultaneously navigating being on reality tv. I went back to rewatch the documentary after reading!

An incredible memoir. I have so much respect for Jill and am rooting for her to continue her growth and healing journey as she navigates deeply complex family relationships, a legal system that can be at once both just and unjust, and development of her own sense of self.

I’m a sucker for a good Duggar story, and I really do enjoy Jill’s journey of breaking free from the cult. I found there were some new insights here, and it was nice to hear things straight from Jill’s mouth instead of online speculation.
Interestingly, one of my big takeaways was more about Michelle sounding trapped, as Jill really made Jim Bob sound more like the cause of turmoil. How fun it would be for her to break free of him.

This book made me evaluate how I consume entertainment. Jill uses her words to express the deep anxiety she felt growing up and how the show changed her father. She also reflects on toxic beliefs that she has worked through.
She doesn’t address the content of Derick’s controversial twitter comments, and I feel that at the very least, they could have expressed that the comments were unnecessary. Regardless, that is not what the book is about.
Jill’s words remind us that children are not a sideshow. That parents should keep healthy boundaries with adult children. And that it’s never too late to learn to say “no” and live with the discomfort of others’ disapproval.

Wasn't so unedited, but we don't need to know all their family business. Well written and interesting, while also very sad. I never watched the Duggars, but find it so sad that TLC cared more about money than the immorality of showcasing a pedophile.
