Still tons of questions, as mentioned in my review of the first book. And.... these questions continue, thoughts notes below.
- Cat? (that's it. that's the question) Poorly written character that didn't start to have substance, besides "Mean girl", until later in the book and then for someone who was so 'pivotal' she just.... vanished in the late second half of the book.
- Violet somehow gets more childish in this book? How did we stall out with her character growth in such a long second installment?
- The fighting between her and Xayden draaaaaged on. It became very wash, rinse, repeat. I grew weary of it.
- There are now so many side characters that I'm getting them confused...
The plot twists were (slightly) less visible in this book than the first, there was one notable thing that caught me by surprise.
Overall this book was.... dramatic. Tense, emotional and full of various kinds of drama, but with very little character growth compared to what we saw in the first book.

The story in this book is just wonderful. It picks up after the battle at Resson after Xaden takes Violet to Aretia to be mended. The story pans out and we have a new figure of disgust. Vice Commandant Varrish. Hes an actual swine. There's battles, mythological animal death, people death. It never ends at Basgiath.
The characters were all fit for purpose I fell. Let's start with Violet. I really liked her in the last book. This one she's like a petulant child. Her whole battle with Xaden over him not telling her everything is just pointless. There are things that he just can tell her for her own safety and his. I didn't like this time round.
Xaden. Now a graduated Lieutenant. I love Xaden for his spirit, unwavering loyalty, bravery and sacrifice. I'm needing answers after the ending! He's still a solid book boyfriend.
Minor characters were all great. Dain getting his redemption arc makes me happy. Varrish and his cronies are just disgusting.
The book is in first person from Violet's POV. Except chapter 66. That's in Xaden's. It works but I would like a bit more of a dual POV to get more into Xaden's mind.
Overall, I love the Empyrean series. It makes me ugly cry and still gives me epic book hangovers. I really recommend it.
