I only realized that Neverwhere was Gaiman's first full novel after I had finished it and was honestly surprised. Neverwhere is a thoughtful and exquisite novel and Gaiman paints some magnificent pictures of a fantastic and magical "sub-urban" life. While the story certainly does have elements of Alice in Wonderland, it seemed far more akin to Labyrinth, or Little Monsters in it's presentation. At times scary, but always unpredictable, it's a book that I am supremely glad I read and will be recommending to everyone.

When Richard Mayhew helps a girl named Door bleeding, little did he know that she would open the Door to another world for him, changing his life. Fantastic world building, tying in the world Richard knows and the one that Door is apart of. Neil Gaiman is my favorite author, but I think this book was a little too slow for me and I found myself having to push to finish it, especially since it was a dark story and it was hard to like the characters.

Very easy to read but I couldn't get into it. It has strong alice in wonderland vibes . I wanted to know more about the world that was created than the story. There wasn't much "world building" to get me hooked on the story.

Clever writing, compelling story, but as with other Gaiman work I'm left wondering, is that all there is? Is it all just on the surface or is he playing with ideas that are a bit more substantive. My feeling is no, but I'd love to be proven wrong.

I feel like if I want to read this kind of urban fantasy with mythic undertones, I might as well read China Mieville and get some meat to go with my potatoes... It kinda feels like Mieville read Neverwhere and was so frustrated by the lack of depth, or internal critique, he decided to write UnLundun, and ended up with a better book.

I love Neil Gaiman's books. I love the magical, creative worlds he brings to life, and it wasn't any different with Neverwhere. However, even tho I loved the world of London Below and trying to find out more about it, it still felt slow and didn't capture my attention as much as it might have. The reediming parts of this book appeared toward the ending, and were also in the form of some really fun characters, and also trying to solve Door's mystery (which, tbh, turned out to be rather anticlimactic if you ask me...). Overall enjoyable read, but definitely not my favorite from Gaiman's works.
