A moving, lovely novel. Adichie does a wonderful job taking the reader inside Kambili's head, into her world of silences. The subtleties of the prose give one a sense of the damage Christianity has imposed as a part of its colonial legacy through the broken family ties, rigid rules, the erasure of local cultures.

Good, but there is really a lack of plot. Also, weird age gap...

Love her writing, though at times the physical abuse and the emotional toll it took on the characters and on me made it difficult for me to keep going. I would've loved more insight into the father, some explanation or even some hint of his own introspection/reasoning for how he could reconcile his religious devotion with such physical violence.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s writing is vivid and lovely, so I’m giving this four stars for her style. The story itself didn’t grip me as much as Americanah, though. If you are going to read one of her books- I recommend Americanah but it also is unfair of me to compare the two as they’re different books. Purple Hibiscus has beautiful depictions of religion, understanding family members, and navigating the world.

A beautifully written story. I often felt immersed in Kambili’s story of self-discovery, pain, and her love for her family. This book left me wanting more after turning each and every page.
