Some characters receive better characterization than others. Some are really well-written, but others are very lacking and flat.

I enjoyed three book, but many of the characters felt flat and the setting got the attention of a sound stage. The fact that the book did not function as a standalone also weakened my experience of the narrative as a whole.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to, and it really resonated with my students. The story was fun, even though as a reader of mythology, I was able to predict some plot elements. That fact actually made the novel that much more enjoyable for me, personally.

The novel also inspired out-of-school reading for several of my students, who were not previously big readers. For me, that makes the novel a five-star read.
