I went into the book blindly and was pleasantly surprised! It felt very YA but for what it was, I liked it. I kind of wanted to see more of Carter.

This book is so poorly written I thought it was AI. The plot is incredibly generic, the characters are all stereotypes, and I am losing my mind.

the lack of communication was killing me but ig it makes sense for their ages. Also I loved how Andrew had a soft side for the kids. I was getting angry with Jamie but considering the circumstances, a lot of the way he acted throughout the book was understandable, even if it pissed me off.

I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this (in a good way). When I was able to predict something, it would be only shortly before it was revealed.

I will have to write this review later. I have a lot to convey but I don't know how to do it at the moment. The content of this book was very heavy, definitely check trigger warnings. One thing that isn't explicitly called out in the warnings related to death of parent:
The main character's wife dies during child birth

Things I do want to say before I edit my review:
- if you don't see the parallels between their society and our own, you are dense.
- I loved the pop quiz device the author used
- it made sense to me when I realized the author also writes poetry because this was one of few books that had me sobbing
- the concept of where we put the love for someone we no longer have was well explored

I guess it wasn't my genre.
I'm okay with open endings, especially if there's more of a psychological horror aspect. I feel like Eric's belief that it was all real was very sudden and not well built up to. I'm not sure if I'd prefer to think that it was real or not. I can appreciate an open ending, but sometimes they just feel like an excuse for loose ends.
