An insightful coming-of-age memoir about overcoming the odds and creating a successful life. It's a thoughtful account of his childhood, dealing with his mom's drug addiction and unstable home life (after the age of 10), going into the military and then going to law school.
It's a shame that so many people on Goodreads were spewing hate at this book lately that Goodreads turned off reviewing and rating for this book.

This did not feel like a novel.  Pages upon pages of snippets about Herman Melville and other writers. There are a few fragments about the protagonist's life. Her wedding dinner was at Applebees and other sad reveals. Dead people were more meaningful to this protagonist than anything. Is this like a non-fiction/novel hybrid or something experimental? Ugh.
