Definitely not something I would usually gravitate towards, but I'm so glad I picked it up! I loved how the concept of time was used to move the story forward.

This could have been 200 pages shorter...I think my favorite parts were the poetry that Arthur's grandfather wrote. I found the main character highly unlikeable and annoying, but his growth was impressive. Overall a 3.75, not rounding up to 4 because of how long this dragged on.

I love this book and Atwood. She's such a talented and descriptive writer. Definitely plan to read The Testaments and her other work.

The examination of female friendship while growing up was so beautifully described. Woodson's writing is so lyrical and moves the story along with grace. I just wish this book was longer! I really loved the "On Writing Another Brooklyn" section at the end of the book as well. Woodson closed off her note with, "At the day's end, a writer lives alone with her story, wrestling with characters and settings, and the way light filters into and out of a scene. The deeper messages often escape her. Sometimes I take for granted the journey through the telling. At other times I curse the muse's power. but through it all, I live each day in deep gratitude." Are you kidding me? I'd cut off a limb if it meant I could write like that.

This is a re-read for me! Reading it now for school definitely helped me enjoy this more. Not my favorite book ever, but I love it.

I thought this was really beautiful. Jane Hamilton is really talented at writing characters that you really feel for. I despised Ruby the whole time but held love in my heart for Ruth. The ending felt rushed, and I wished the big event occurred earlier on so we got to see more of Ruth's recovery. I took a star off for that and for the overt racism that went unchecked by Ruth, despite her being the protagonist and seemingly disagreeing with the comments.
