the author tries to make a lot of commentary through animals and humans which i found interesting. especially how different horses that alice's dad takes on represent different women in his life that he wants to control (""Jody's a good boy,' Ruby agreed. 'Gentle, you know? Of course, he's spent his whole life with girls. Three older sisters, two daughters, there aren't many men who could do neatly as well with so many women.'
'He's good with horses too,' Mrs. Altman said.
Ruby laughed. 'Same thing.'" pg. 125)

This was so real and as a person who's struggled with disordered eating this really hit home.

I wish we had gotten more of Steve's thoughts and feelings throughout the trial! But I do love how this story makes you question your own implicit biases and teaches you about how wild the court room is.

"Suppose, for instance, that men were only repre-
sented in literature as the lovers of women, and were
never the friends of men, soldiers, thinkers, dreamers;
how few parts in the plays of Shakespeare could be al-
lotted to them; how literature would suffer! We might
perhaps have most of Othello; and a good deal of Antony;
but no Caesar, no Brutus, no Hamlet, no Lear, no
Jaques-literature would be incredibly impoverished,
as indeed literature is impoverished beyond our count-
ing by the doors that have been shut upon women." (page 83). This was the most impactful quote of the whole essay. I can't stop thinking about it.

There were a good 100 pages that weren't needed and the book is supposed to be about Natsya but way too many chapters are from Josh's perspective.

Despite the rampant incest,
this book was beautifully written. 448 pages of pure poetry.
