I listened to the Graphic Audio version of this because I love the work that they do. The story is very slow until the last 25% and honestly I just don’t buy the love story of Feyre and Tamlin. Their interactions together did not read as romantic and it felt like she was in love with him just to progress the plot; however, my rating is still pretty high because of how fleshed out the side characters were and overall interest in the world
Okay, the spice in this book is TOP TIER. That being said, the build-up took a little longer than I expected, the first 40% of the book was mostly world-building and the two main characters really didn’t interact much until that point. I was starting to lose interest and then BOOM finally some chemistry and it picked up exponentially from there! This book had me blushing and kicking my feet, the second half of the book heavily influenced my overall rating
Absolutely adored this book! Had to suspend belief for some of the plot points but overall I enjoyed the story and Eldest Daughter™ representation. The interactions between the sisters were hilarious and I was honestly surprised with the amount of graphic language and sex talk for a YA book. The writing style was fun to read but I had to be petty and knock of .5 stars for the use of “AF” unironically and too many pop culture references
I want to preface this review by saying I never intended to read this book as one look at the cover told me it was going to be a Twilight knockoff. That being said, I was looking for a new GraphicAudio audiobook to listen to and thought “How bad could it be?”
Oh, how naive I was.
As someone who has read more than their fair share of fan fiction in their lifetime, I don’t typically write a book off for being poorly written as long as the story is entertaining. That is not the case for this book. I typically enjoy a lot of YA books but the writing is incredibly juvenile and the author literally uses phrases like “FML” and “sexy AF” multiple times throughout.
Grace goes on so many monologues in her head that half of them could have been cut out with no effect on the plot (which there is very little of to begin with). I was turned off when Jaxon talked to Grace for the first time and she proceeded to ramble about how hot and broken and sexy he was for 10 minutes before she actually responded to what he said. From this point on whenever Grace would go on about how ‘mysteriously sexy’ Jaxon was, I would fast forward until dialogue actually started again.
While I could go on and on about what I disliked about the book, I feel like I’ve ever wasted enough time that I can never get back on this. Too many similarities to other stories and WAY too many pop culture references to said stories that were being ripped off.
While the main plot point of this book was a little too close to the Hunger Games for me, I really enjoyed the banter between Pae and Kai and the magic system of the world. The book definitely could’ve been shorter but the ending has me excited to dive into the next one!
