Discourse on Colonialism by Aimé Césaire
medium-paced
“The bourgeoise is condemned to become every day more snarling, more openly ferocious, more shameless, more summarily barbarous; it is the implacable law that every decadent class finds itself turned into the receptacle into which there flows all the dirty waters of history…”
The “logic” of capital is a more likely villain than any other; colonialism is market interest.

Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World by Jason Hickel
hopeful
informative
inspiring
reflective
fast-paced
Degrowth gets a really bad rep, and is probably a bad name - critics can easily disparage the idea without even engaging with it. I think this book is really good and I will absolutely recommend it to a lot of people. Turning historical analysis into present-day inspiration is golden.
This book made things feel much more urgent to me. Capitalism gotta go.

The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey by Ernesto Che Guevara
5.0
Che’s speech to Cuban medical students on August 20, 1960 is really incredible, especially after reading his travel notes. Read his speech, even if you don’t read this book.
Tribunes of the People and the Trade Unions by Leon Trotsky, Vladimir Lenin, Karl Marx
This one is juicy - really enjoyed the Trotsky articles, especially his conversation with the CIO official.
Labor Party cool. Workers reading about past rebellions and realizing their power cool. Union federations embracing their partnership with the state… maybe not so cool.
This mainly made me want to read & understand more Trotsky.

Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux by Black Elk
Neihardt is kinda weird and adds so much dramatization + completely rewrites sections of his conversations with Black Elk. This edition (The Complete Edition) has footnotes for all of Neihardt’s changes, and compares them to the original unchanged transcript.
Black Elk is an incredible storyteller and visionary. His recounting of his own life is beautiful, and so painful.

Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe
5.0
Honestly feels like a must-read for decolonization, but I don’t really know much. The public perception of Ireland’s struggle for liberation is very different from others.
Sinn Fein is really interesting, the idea of “Liquidating otherwise unrecoverable political capital amassed by the IRA gunmen.” Decades of militancy, violence, and death is effectively cashed out for less-than-satisfactory political gains. Northern Ireland is still a colony.
Brendan Hughes, an ex-IRA official, said “The boat [Sinn Fein] is sailing on the high seas, with all the luxuries that it brings, and the poor people that launched the boat are left sitting in the muck.” Maybe the worst part of Sinn Fein’s political success was that it required complete denunciation of the IRA’s militant actions and those involved.
Have to think about this book for a while, but I’m really inspired to read more about other liberation movements. RIP Bobby Sands.
