Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs
2.0
Content warning; racism, anti-indigenous speech/sentitment, torture, mentions of rape & forced prostitution
Overall thoughts:
I think that this was an okay first book in a series. There were scenes that definitely could have been cut out & it would have made the flow of the story better. But the story itself was kind of all over the place & I'm not sure certain things were handled rightly.
I am going to read on to the next book & see how I feel about the series

This was interesting
I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I started this but I didn’t hate it. It is corny & cliche, but it IS a novella so it deserves some slack for its wild pacing & rushed feeling. But I am excited to continue on in this world!

Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs
DNFing @ pg 50.
I can't do it anymore. I don't like where the story is going because I honestly careless for the story & I don't give a single fuck for Anna's and Charles' relationship.
Maybe ill come back to this series/book later on, but not right now.

Content warning;
Rep: queer side characters, drag queens, friendship, grandmother/granddaughter bond, animal companions, SLOW BURN romance

The writing was kind of off. It felt like there were missing words in sentences & the pacing of the dialogue was all over the place in the “non magical” world that we meet Breen in. This just felt campy to me. Like I was reading fanfic & was just reading it cause it wasn’t overall bad, just a little bit ridiculous. I am still interested in reading on in the series, despite its campiness, cause I think the world building was interesting as well as the over arching problem. But this SERIOUSLY, needed some editing and format changes to help with the flow of the narrative.
Pros:
The relationships in this? I absolutely loved. Breen’s and Marcos friendship!! It was so cute & wholesome. They cared so much for each other & were each other’s biggest supporters

I overall had a good time with this. Could it have been shorter? Yes. I think that were scenes that could have been cut out or stream lined with other scenes or events, but I saw it as Maas putting little tid-bits/hints/foreshadowing of info to be used later on in the series. So while some scenes could have been cut, I think that the pacing overall was still really good. There was always something happening, some new information being revealed and a new dynamic of the murder mystery that was being unfolded. (Though I should say that I have read little to NONE murder mysteries, so my comment on the pacing on THAT aspect of the book may be a little skewed) I also loved the friendships that we got to see, how grief was portrayed, and the slow burn romance that we saw develop between Bryce and Hunt. The ENDING HAD ME FUCKED UP. It was WILD & I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON BOOK 2
I thought Maas’ discussion of slavery and interracialism were “interesting.” I think she nailed, for the most part, what interracial people go through with their identity & how hard it can be to be part of either group and how they deal with not fitting in with either groups.
The romance(s):
It is SLOW BURN Y’ALL. I’m talking like nothing happening until the last 1/4th of the book slow. (At least in terms of physical stuff) There’s definitely a lot of emotional bonding/feelingss that develop between Bryce and Hunt & I really appreciated that.
