This book was brutal and bleak. The characters of  Hendrix Young and Simon J. Craft were well developed, although a fraction of the book was about them, just superb.

The very dated language makes it hard to read at times. I couldn't push through all the side stories and characters that started popping up around the middle of the book. Also, from what I am reading Tom Sawyer makes an appearance again towards the end and I just can't with this character.

A lot of navel gazing, in all its meanings, from the derogatory to the divine. A beautiful story of a friendship and a great way to discover Robert Maplethorpe's photography.
