This book has great vibes! If you are a vibes reader, this one should stay on your list. This book had a lot of great elements that I love, however, many of my frustrations with the book detracted from my enjoyment which lead to me not finishing it. DNF at 47%.
This story seems very character driven so I would have appreciated more time getting to know them all at the beginning before the stakes got high and the plot took off. Additionally, the plot, setting, and magic system felt very underdeveloped. I would have enjoyed more time understanding and experiencing it all rather than quickly moving on to the next point. I am a disappointed because this book is so hyped on Tiktok.
I am not opposed to picking up book two, but I would need to know before reading it that it is different from this one.

Not for me.

felt very predictable and cliché to me. The characters were not tangible and the beginning was underdeveloped.

DNF @ 30% —> skim the rest.

In the beginning, I thought this was a unique story with lots of potential. However, as I read on, this book felt like a crossover between The Princess Diaries 2 and Bridgerton without having any of its own independent development.

The characters felt very flat to me. The writing did not grip or hook me.

The text messages/town gossip column at the beginning of each chapter we are the only locations in which any palpable personality was felt. I read some other reviews that said “the other two books in the series support the epistolary format being similar to You’ve Got Mail.” However, this book is being marketed as an interconnected standalone therefore, I disagree with that sentiment. Additionally, there was no development or personality outside of these parts. Finally, all of the on page comparisons to the story “being like a movie” in every other chapter were too cliché for me.

I would definitely give this author another chance if there were enough reviews from sources that I trust saying the writing is vibrant, developed, and unique.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I loved this book! I was hooked from the very beginning and was completely consumed. The atmosphere and setting are very tangible. The tension is strong. The vibes are perfect.

The tone of the writing is definitely that of a 21 year old FMC who has been lonely most of her life. It is completely appropriate for the story, but is worth knowing before starting.

There are a lot of similarities in the beginning as the show Wednesday. If you like that show, paired with mystery, and professor x student, think about checking this one out.

6 stars. Through a Somber Sky is truly one of my favorite books ever. Period.

This story picks up right where Through the Wicked Wood leaves off. What will happen next in the pack of misfit’s quest to resist the corrupt king? Will the repressed magick of enchantresses finally be free? What will the cost be?

Through a Somber Sky has plot twists paired with high stakes and powerful emotions - darkness, love, grief, anger, hate, inspiration, grace, and so much beauty. The characters are tangible, lovable, and gray in the best way.

Each of Kristen’s books amaze me and leave me in absolute awe of her art. The foundation set in book 1 (and the novella!!!) allows for Kristen to craft this novel in a truly exceptional manner. Her writing is exceptional. The plot is thorough, robust, and remarkably developed. If you love Throne of Glass, specifically the tandem read and KOA - this book is for you. If you like the premise of Heartless Hunter - this series is for you. If you like ACOTAR - this series is for you. If you love a romantasy that is tragic - this series is for you. If you love mental health reps - this is for you. Check your TW.✨✨

Thank you Kristen for entrusting me with an advanced copy of your beautiful story. I am so thankful to you.

The fun thing about having a terrible memory paired with recovering from a concussion is that I can re-read a book and it feels like this first time!

4.5 stars! This story is phenomenal. This is a fantasy romance that follows a savage assassin who is working through her trauma and a MMC that would burn the world for her. The world is unique and refreshing. The characters are diverse. The plot is intentional.

My only frustration is that the wording and writing style did distract from the plot. The two felt off balanced to me.

I will read book 2! Please for the love of Clode, more Kaan in the sequel.
