Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto

oh my god. what a fun and exciting book, with so many twists and turns and actually funny humor!! i loved it - all of the characters (well, aside from the obvious douchebags!), which doesn't happen often. meddy is so cute i want to wrap her in a blanket and give her a kiss. i'm so surprised at how i basically devoured this in one day lol
and, also it was a very short part of the storyline but i loved it so much.
and, also
Spoiler
when i read about how maureen acted around jacqueline, my gay ass immediately ventured into the territory of lesbianism, but then i ended up thinking her behavior was weird because of the theft, and then when it was revealed she actually was in love with her, i let out the biggest cheer. i love my lesbians.

the pace was good, it was engaging, and the mystery itself stays compelling.
levi is my babygirl i would do anything for him.
my only real complaint is about dominic's size. we got it the first time - man's built like a firetruck.
also, i love martine. i'm dismissing the fact that she has a husband and headcanoning her as a lesbian <3

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

i devoured this, which is surprising in itself considering how it takes me ages to finish a book nowadays, but it was fast-paced and interestingly written and i adore it. the way pip throws herself into this world of criminals and drug dealers and potential murderers without as much as a second-thought is baffling and annoying, though. i also didn't really like the ending that much. the reveal itself was underwhelming and i think it would've been more gripping without what follows. either way, it was a very enjoyable read!

it wasn't so bad, but i liked the first book better and found this one quite boring in comparison. i'm just hoping everything gets solved by the next book because otherwise it's just going to feel dragged out for me and i fear i'm not gonna continue. i liked the last chapter though and levi is still my #1 baby angel so a star for him, but it's starting to feel like he and dominic are just so. one-dimensional at times and it's starting to irk me. to quote another review, "looking at the target audience for these books it is difficult to read them without feeling like it is just there as a gay fetish for straight women instead of intimate relations between two characters," i couldn't agree more.

⭐ 2.5 - spoilers ahead!
the seven of spades murder is just getting dragged out, and i know we're not gonna find out who it is in the next book, either, and it will follow the same boring plot of levi and dominic working on two different that suddenly have something to do with each other and they work together and seven of spades is forgotten every now and then and then we get to the last chapter and boom seven of spades is back. UGH. nothing pushes the actual case everyone is here for forward until the very last moment. and when we get to the next book, there's a time skip and again the pattern is repeated. it feels like nothing happens in these books until the last chapter.
i also hate the way the author keeps describing people and recalling past events the same way, as if it's all just copy-pasted from the previous book, as if the reader isn't capable of remembering that levi has nightmares after they've been told about it 10 times.
dominic and levi's relationship was annoying, too. not that they spent any time together, either, and when they did, it was only to have angry sex or beat each other up in lieu of "resolving the tension". like, you two need better coping mechanisms and a therapist to go work on your anger management issues before you enter any relationships, clearly, and i'm glad levi is finally doing that. also, dominic is just an asshole and crossed a few too many lines for me to just want him and levi to get back together. you're gonna say it's because of his addiction blah blah blah. but when we get to his pov, we can see, read, tell that he's well aware of what he's saying to levi and what he's thinking when he takes jabs at him, and then levi is being stupid and sucks his dick and that's really it. i hope he dies idgaf

i'm gonna be honest and say i mostly skimmed through the book to see if the SoS case was gaining speed (it wasn't) and read the parts i thought might be interesting (also got let down) and the ending, and. i need this author to stop using the same scheme to start and end every book. the SoS mystery (which the readers are actually here for!) could've been nicely wrapped up in book 2 at latest, but the author chose to drag it out and sideline it in favor of a shitty relationship and uninteresting cases.

i wish i'd stopped after book 2 lol the reveal was so anticlimactic, the dominic/levi relationship went downhill in the earlier books and didn't rise back up, and i was honestly rooting for SoS all this time, so the ending had me rolling my eyes.
martine is saving the day as always. and rebel. i was living with constant fear they'd kill the poor dog though
