This book has left me speechless. First, the world created was much different than most fantasy books and that was really refreshing. The author went to great detail to create a diverse set of characters that influence the character in different ways. I also love that the author remains neutral on the main character’s perspective; rin is not good or bad and Kuang doesn’t try to convince you that she is one or the other.
At times I would get lost in the military strategy/lingo but other than that I LOOOVED this book!
An easy to follow book, has good pacing and the author illustrates the flaws of the main character really well. The twist at the end was shocking and I truly did not see it coming!
The writing style is not my favorite and at some points it felt super cheesy. I definitely needed a better explanation of the historical context of the situation and more world building. I spent a lot of the book hoping they would talk more about what exactly happened more than just typical environment/political turmoil as the cause for a society crash. Also, Adam and Juliette reminded me of that couple in high school that would not stop making out. I do want to continue with the next book though because I’m interested to see where they take the story.
This book eloquently illustrates how a smart and educated individual can slowly slip into abuse. Ugggh my heart just hurt for what Evie had to go through as a way to protect the people around her.
This book kept me on my toes the whole time and although the writing style is not my favorite, It didn’t affect my overall rating of the book. Overall a very enjoyable read!
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated
5.0
“Addie looks up at the ceiling. ‘Don’t forget,’ she says softly, the words half prayer, half plea. Henry’s arms tighten, a body surfacing from sleep. ‘Forget what?’ he murmurs, already sinking again. And Addie waits for his breath to steady before she whispers the word to the dark. ‘Me.’”
This is how you do character development! Absolutely incredible story. It was unique, captivating and reflective. The author also does a well executed open ending.
I’m officially making this my favorite read of 2024!
Great read. Was hooked from the beginning and the author does a great job of entwining the story lines together without making it confusing for the reader. The ending was satisfying but also boring? Also felt a bit cruel to have the most abused character end up being the one to kill bear… but maybe that’s just me🤷♀️
So far this has been my favorite book in the series. SJM seamlessly expands the world of Erilea and adds new characters that are dynamic and intriguing. Especially hooked on Manon’s storyline as she navigates her fight to be wing leader.
And the cliff hanger at the end😱 I will be reeling until I get my hands on the next book!
This book left me feeling so warm and fuzzy inside. The story was very simple but not boring. It was satisfying to read past and present with multiple characters intertwine into the conclusion. This book also did an excellent job addressing domestic abuse as well as the gross mistreatment of women in the early 1900s. This is a must read for your cozy fall TBR!
