I'd seen the Daniel Radcliffe version of the film but not read the book. As it was October and I was feeling in the mood for things that go bump in the night, I decided to give it a go. I enjoyed it but felt it took a while to get going. Once it did it was good.
It is atmospheric and claustrophobic especially once the main character reaches the house trapped there by the upcoming water that floods the causeway and we know he can't escape. The woman in black who he sees is particularly unsettling and I think what I loved about the book was the description of the transference of her deep and inconsolable grief and hatred.
It's a fast read and I'm gald I finally read it. I wouldn't say I was terrified by it, but it was certainly pretty unpleasant and I loved the end of the book more than the one in the film.

Buena historia. Te atrapa. Te imaginas las marismas, la niebla, la bruma. Mejor si no la lees de noche y sola.

Very well-written with a creepy atmosphere and an ending that I saw coming, but it still managed to get me emotional. A classic ghost story for people who like ambiance and don’t need jump scares to feel spooked.
Also, how cute is it that the dog is named Spider, of all things?

I liked it well enough but it took awhile to get into it. Had no interest in reading it until Gavin and Simon at The Readers bemoaned the awful Hollywood ending of the movie. The movie got the atmosphere and tone down, but changed many of the details, so if this book is assigned for school reading, don't rely on the movie. Read the bloody book.

Spooky, but pretty predictable. I still enjoyed it, was just what I wanted to read this time of the year.
