A poignant memoir of a woman through the bones and bodies of her profession. I liked that it was less a personal memoir and more of a professional one, but there was a moment about halfway through that was especially trying emotionally, but was handled as well as could be considering the circumstances.

If you are looking for a more archaeological treatise, this is not it. This focuses mostly on modern cases. Again, really well done, I just personally went in hoping for more archaeological work. The immediacy and modernity of her cases was sometimes distressing, but handled respectfully.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Perfect for murder mystery girlies. Very dark at times. Perfect mix of medical and layman terminology.

I love biological anthropology so when this book was recommended on my Tiktok, I knew I had to read it! Sue Black is clearly passionate about her work and this book is a love letter to her profession.

Parts of this were definitely more memoir than textbook, which is a good and ok thing for me. I liked it for how personable it made the story, but it also sometimes affected the pacing and made me wonder how certain cases could possibly be related to the body parts being discussed. It is also a very difficult read in terms of content, I had not read the trigger warnings beforehand and wish I had as there are very sensitive topics in this book.

I would recommend this book to fans of true crime and anatomy, although I am definitely more of the latter rather than the former (which did affect how I felt about some of the content). This is also a great read for anyone interested in science and research in general.

Sue Black does a wonderful job teaching the importance of forensic anthropology from head to toe. As a long-time crime drama fan, I was fascinated by the way Black was able to use her fruitful career as a catalyst to introduce or explain the human anatomy. The information was dumbed down enough for most people to understand what part of the anatomy was being described and was easy enough to follow along with very little medical background. I would recommend this for any aspiring forensic investigator or, like me, the average crime enthusiast.
