I bet your wondering how I came up with 2.75 star rating, & boy I’ll tell y’a! Holden(our main character) is a real interesting guy. I think this book is a well written book about coming of age & innocence vs adulthood. There lots of imagery and theme throughout the book, but I didn’t enjoy read this book all that much.
My favorite part of the whole book, was when Holden talks about his paper of ancient Egypt that he wrote & his professor read aloud to him; then he sees the mummies in the museum at the end and quotes the phony paper he wrote up for literature class. Oof, Holden. Get a grip.

I had no idea what this book was about but have always been intrigued. I felt such discomfort, anxiety, and pure dislike/hate of this book as I read it . I cannot speak for people who have severe narcissistic mental health disorders as to how accurate it is but if you have ever been in a toxic relationship with a narcissist.. this book is hella triggering. The way Holden interacts and speaks of those around him swinging back and forth from praising/loving to tearing them to shreds in whiplash I have experienced being on the other side of that and listening to it. I also just didn’t understand the plot much and the way it abruptly ended made me mad, that I had gone through all that emotional turmoil for it to just… finish with no real reason. Anyways I wouldn’t recommend this book unless you are curious about what it feels like to be around someone with actual narcissism.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy catcher in the rye at all. I picked it up on a whim, since I figured the summer before college would be the perfect time to read it. Maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much, the themes of innocence lost and struggling to find your place in the world really hit home. Maybe it’s a testament to Salinger’s writing. Maybe it’s just that I will never read anything like it again.
I’ll never understand why people call this a red flag book. Yes, Holden is not the easiest protagonist in the world, but he is also confused, depressed, young, and traumatized.

This book is a character study. It focuses on being young and feeling the weight of people expecting you to have everything decided for the future, to know what career path you want to follow, when you might feel as if you know nothing.

I have seen that many people dislike Holden. I agree that he is not someone that I'd like to hang out with but I don't hate him. I don't think I can, since his thoughts and behavior are affected by things he can't control. Firstly, I think he is autistic. Secondly, he found his dead brother's body when he was a kid and has been sexually harassed many times since a very young age. These are very traumatizing experiences for anyone, let alone a child. So that, combined with his autism, I believe explain why he thinks the way he does.

I had to read this for English and it felt similar to Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds. Holden and Coriolanus have very similar psychological damage that you can only feel bad for them. You can tell Holden is so desperate for love and affection from anyone but keeps failing at his relationships.
