First, I highly recommend having some background in Greek mythology prior to reading this book

I had such high hopes going into this book and ended up being vastly disappointed. I love all things Greek mythology and the cover is gorgeous so I immediately bought it and started reading it right away. I found myself extremely confused right off the bat trying to keep the characters and bloodlines straight but that resolved itself rather quickly once I got further into the book, but then I started becoming confused about the plot itself. The small romance in the book was very cute at first but then just felt forced after, I felt myself more interested in the main characters friends' romance rather that the main character's. I made it half way in and found myself feeling rushed and overwhelmed with information on the main character's backstory in the few jumps into the past. As new information emerged and more and more plot twists started happening I felt like I couldn't trust any of the characters I had started to love. Im all for a good plot twist but there were so many small ones that I genuinely couldn't keep up. There was so much information and plot packed into one book the ending left me feeling unsatisfied, like the author spent so much time writing but got bored near the end and wrapped it all up in 2 pages.

Dont get me wrong, a lot of the story itself is extremely interesting and the characters are very likeable but I just didn't enjoy reading this book as much as I usually would. I felt more forced to finish it so I could move on rather than wanting to keep reading it. I know this book is a perfect fit for some people, but definitely not for me.

This was dark, but also a lot of fun. I've been really into Greek myths lately and this was great. It got a little teen angsty at times, but it is a YA book and I'm old. That being said, it's definitely for older teens. This book gets gruesome often, and is not a Percy Jackson readalike. This is for the teen into The Hunger Games and Battle Royale.

I know the description of Greek mythology meets Hunger Games is incredibly overused for this book, but there really isn't a better way to describe it. I'm a sucker for any kind of mythology, so I was really hoping to enjoy this book and I definitely did. It was slow in places, especially at the start, but that didn't bother me too much. There were a couple of, for me, predictable elements, but there were also enough twists that I hadn't expected so I didn't mind. I really liked the characters and the way the fantasy elements interacted with the real-world setting.

Imagine a modern world where the Greek gods were real and every seven years, a hunt called the Agon, sees the gods become mortal for seven days. Families of hunters descended from classic heroes such as Jason and Perseus are the ones who hunt the mortal gods and each other, wanting to claim the gods' power for themselves. Lore is the last of the House of Perseus but she turned her back on the Agon following the death of her parents and younger sisters, but when her childhood friend, Castor returns and Athena offers a pact to defeat the others, Lore is drawn back into the life she tried to leave behind.

This had all the ingredients of being a cracking read: classical mythology (which I love), action, and only a sprinkling of romance, but the finished book is somehow less than the sum of its parts. Saying that, it wasn't a bad read and there was quite a lot to enjoy, I can't quite put my finger on why it didn't work as well as it should have, there was just something vital missing for me. It was an okay first read, but it's not a book I would be drawn back to to reread.
