Great book

Great read not something you have to over think and I want to read the next one already. Little too short though.

This series as well as Haddix’s The Missing series hold a special place in my heart. As a kid, I actually hated reading novels, but Haddix’s books made me love reading. I just remember really enjoying the storyline of this book.

This was an ok book. I'm not saying it was bad, it was just ok. It didn't really wow me. I'm sure the others are better.

The iconic young reader dystopia.

I wish I had actually read this as a kid instead of picking it up, petting its cover, and then putting it down literally every time I went to the bookstore. Past me was somewhat lacking in gumption.

Frankly, I was a little surprised that
SpoilerJen STRAIGHT UP WAS SHOT AND MURDERED BY THE GOVERNMENT.
Like. Okay? I had totally interpreted that danger as 100% threat 0% reality, but you do you. The stakes for the next book have been successfully upped.

Easy quick read.

There has been a famine, food sources are low, the government has implemented a two child per family law. Luke is a third child. One who is kept hidden by his family. He is finally of an age where he understands he is different than the rest of his family. He has never left his home property, rarely ever been outside.

The woods behind his home have been taken down and a neighborhood built for Barons, the rich people. Now his family is even more scared of Luke being found so he barely is allowed to come out of his attic bedroom. He has taken to watching the outside through the vents in the attic. He is observant. He knows who lives where and all of their com8ngs and goings.

One day he thinks he notices a curtain move, a light from a house where no one should be home, he believes there might be another third child living there. One day he gets brave enough to sneak over and go in the other house. He finds Jen who is indeed a third child too. Being a Baron, she has access to a computer and chats online with other third children. She has organized a rally for them to go out and protest the population law. Luke is scared to attend.

Luke doesn’t go and Jen doesn’t seem to have returned. Luke eventually sneaks over and she is not there, but instead he is found by Jen’s dad. This encounter will change Luke’s life forever.

I really enjoyed this book and plan to read the next book in the series as soon as possible.

I was a big fan of Haddix as a preteen, and this book did not disappoint. Even reading it as an adult, I was engaged and intrigued at the world Haddix has created, which in some ways feels scarily not too different from our world. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
