Utterly astounding, John Higgs gives a detailed account of the 20th Century in a way that it has never been looked at before. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific theme, and at the beginning of every chapter, I found myself thinking "what does what he's talking about now have to do with X?" Every time, Higgs manages to connect everything and you actually feel like you understand things like relativity, the id, and other such concepts. A fantastic, funny, deeply interesting book.

Greatly entertaining, concise and informative, with focus on patterns emerging throughout the 20th history. Perhaps even enlightening (in some respects)! Highly recommended!

I was excited about this book after being blown away by the KLF book but this was much more of a slow burner. While some of the weaving of threads I liked was there I found the book slow to get going and stronger as it got closer to the present day

4.5 interesantan polu-filozofski, polu-povijesni osvrt na 20. stoljeće, više orijentiran na duh vremena, promjene u svjetonazoru i pop kulturu nego na godine i činjenice

Though the science is dubious to wrong in places, this is a wonderfully entertaining thought experiment and sociological treatise.

This was a really interesting look at the 20th century, examining the way society and though was shaped/shaping technological development, and the feedback loop that led to the 22st century. I found Higgs to be an engaging and authoritive author, although it did loose me a bit in the post modernist chaper - hence not quite 5 stars.
