This book felt like it had potential, but it ended up really disappointing me. I enjoyed the two distinct writing styles used to differentiate between the two Mexican women characters, and at first found them well written. But as it became apparent that one character is VERY much inspired by the real life María Sabina Magdalena García, it seemed that the author lacked any modicum of creativity by stealing the entire life of a real woman while “fictionalizing” it by calling her a different name. While the super distinct voice that she created for this character was intriguing, it ended up feeling pretty gross and unethical given that it’s based on a woman who was so famously exploited. The other character’s voice provided a contrast in it’s simplicity, which I appreciated at first, but then found to be overly simple and nonsensical in how it jumped around, so that rather than having the effect of being purposeful and interesting, it just felt poorly written. On top of all of this, the ending was also unsatisfying in how it brought the two voices together. Overall, I’m really disappointed in this book because I enjoy the topics brought up, but it not only failed in bringing them together in a powerful way, but also just felt wrong.

The premise was interesting, however, I found it hard to get through Feliciana’s POV. I understood it was supposed to read as if she was talking to Zoe, but the lengthy sentences and repetitiveness overwhelmed me. This made it tough to enjoy her story and instead I looked forward to whenever the POV switched to Zoe. Overall, I think the treatment of Paloma and Leandra’s characters who were the focal points of the novel. Feliciana and Zoe were simply their storytellers and I loved that idea.

This book was a light-hearted and short read and I recommend it for anyone who wants something small and sweet as a palate cleanser.

I got more information about the actual plot of the book from reading the back, but thats because the 'plot' is just a premise for two women to reminise on their lives. I enjoyed this read, but I don't think I understood it deeply.

I want to say the writing isn't very good but maybe it's just the challenge of translation. I couldn't wait for this book to be over, I'm not sure why I even finished it.
