I listened to this in the car and struggled with the levels of audio : sound effects were very loud but the actors voices were not at the same level which made it very hard to discern the dialogue. I will try reading the original book...

This audiobook for me was a far better experience than the BBC radioplay (as much as it pains me to say that). It's not Sherlock-caliber Conan Doyle but it's worth a read/listen.

I seriously enjoyed the crap out of this. Delightfully camp before we knew the word, and probably one of the most influential works of genre fiction out there. This basically set the template for King Kong, Pellucider, Jurassic Park, and the list goes on. The characters were so damn fun and complemented each other perfectly (especially Challenger). The drawbacks are the ones you'd expect from a century+ old adventure novel, meaning racist as hell. Racial hierarchies are explained and justified repeatedly so you DEFINITELY need to know what you're getting into and if you're not able to separate that out you're absolutely justified in avoiding this. If you can though, this is an absolutely delightful adventure story I should've read at a much younger age.

This is another historical "hot take" on dinos in scifi, and it's like...exactly what you'd think?

Did you think phrenology and dinosaur love could be separate? Oh, you sweet summer child.

It's like, fine, it's fun, as long as you say "well, grampa did coke like every day" and then shake your head and enjoy Jurassic Park with Jeff Goldblum as a sex idol.

The Lost World is a surprisingly enjoyable story! It is that rare class of adventure story that doesn't really feel like it's moving very quickly, but is still a fun read all the same.

I also learned about the existence of a couple dinosaurs I had not known about previously. So that's always fun.

Just as a general head's up: there's a general sort of racism that permeates this story, but it's one of those "of the times" types. Granted, the only black character is named Zambo and uses words like "massa," and there's a lot that Doyle says about "superior Europeans" and nonsense like that. But as long as you can accept it as an unfortunate effect of the era it was written in, you should be able to get past that fairly well.

It's worth the read! Especially if you're a dinosaur nerd. And you know you are.
