Another great addition to the Kate Daniels world. Smart, sassy, fun and, oh yeah, there's Curran! What's not to love.

It's great to see these characters out of their comfort zone and how they deal together with the challenges that face them. I think Dear Ole Dad better watch out!

*Disclaimer: I read all 10 books in this series back to back in two weeks and I couldn't stop reading long enough to review each book when I finished it, so this is a review written after finishing and loving all 10 books*

This book does a lot of things right. The main case that Kate and Co. are working on involves important characters that were introduced in previous books, so we get to see a lot of familiar faces. Besides that, the storyline with Curran and the Guild works well because it gives Curran purpose again.

But definitely one of the things that this books accomplish is to establish the complex hate and love relationship between Kate and Roland. Their encounters show how even when Kate knows he is a bad person and she has a lot of reasons to hate him, he is still her dad and he is trying to behave like a dad, so she has conflicting emotions about him. Roland is an interesting bad guy.

Kate and Curran in this one are great, they are learning how to compromise and they are a great team. There's one scene in particular that just shows how great they are together and how they help each other carry heavy loads, which I really appreciated.

Also, there are still so many funny moments, I particularly loved Kate being mad because Curran took the kids (Derek, Ascanio, and Julie) to hunt ghouls during a school day and Curran having no idea why she was mad. I never thought Kate would be the strict parent in that relationship.

After the massive high and a change in status quo, the book was inevitably bound to drop down a level. WRONG. In fact, the book ramps up the spectacular, in terms of the threat, the action and the world building. Adding an Islamic flavor to the series, this is indeed a new direction for Kate even as Roland's threat hovers just over the horizon

Kate & Curran also now try to figure out their relationship and status with the Pack and the Guild. Meanwhile, while there isnt the world ending stakes of the previous book, the events of this book are more personal but still high stakes as Kate is pushed through her limits. There is also an epic but weird encounter with Roland.

The book truly is ramping up but the end game at this point is very unclear as compared to the previous books

I really enjoyed this latest chapter. Andrews does a great job keeping the story interesting without retreading over old character growth. New magic elements, continuing interpersonal conflict. Very happy.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record lmao. I love where the story is going, and enjoyed this 8th book a lot.
