An extremely pointed reframing of conventional sci-fi tropes. Both very readable, and very rewarding.

Excellent world building and character development, attention-grabbing plot. I do wish there wasn't quite so much oppression and loathing around queer identity, though.

Good fun! Pirates and mushrooms and sci-fi murder-mystery-leads-to-worldending-political-mystery, and they kiss in the end. Didn’t really like the bit where I have to wait a while for the next book to come around, but if you do not find those things anathema to your reading experience, I think you would find this enjoyable.

I may need to reread this book at some point. Super cool ideas (some Harrow the Ninth, some China Mieville) but confusing structure/plot.
