Well that was a strange book, but I liked it. Not sure I understood everything, I might have to reread it. At least I was really immersed in the story!

Putting this in my unfinished pile because it made me feel crazy to read. I was so excited about the story and the setting is sooo cool it’s almost enough to keep me going— but this hurts my brain. It is an editing nightmare which pulls me out of the story all the time. It also lacked a certain depth to me. It felt repetitive and contradictory at the same time, and the pacing wasn’t right for me

I enjoyed Stronach’s integration of Māori reo and culture in her steam/mushroom punk world building.

I found this novel hard to follow at times but the world felt refreshingly unique. I look forward to her future works.

The prologue was my favourite bit,  intriguing and promised a great story - a shame that character wasn’t the main character or a character we would meet again. The world building seems interesting but I have no idea what the plot is at a third of the way in… Very slow, internal thoughts and descriptions are quite repetitive and I didn’t enjoy Yat’s personality at all. MC’s don’t have to be good people and are allowed to be messy - but she seemed so defeatist with no hint of changing right through what I read, and I can’t muscle my through that even at 2x playback speed.
