Atmosphere: šŸ‘Œ
Mostly Miami Beach setting paired with feel-it, see-it writing. Immersive even though we are also deep in our MCs mind and viewpoint.

Main POV: šŸ‘Œ
TLDR; a morally grey serial killer. Our MC is complex, open-minded, intuitive, loving, empathetic, perceptive, intelligentā€¦but also judgemental, protective, quick to act, technically evil, and the type of person who will step up to fix a problem when society doesnā€™t seem to have a good (or legal) solution.

Growls and Howls: šŸŗ
I think if you donā€™t identify with, like, or appreciate the MC then this book will not be fun at all for you. I think that because the murders are not the focus; the thriller aspects come from caring about the MC and what happens to them.

Cred Rating: šŸ‘
Plausible to realistic depending on the era and forensic competence. The plotting around key witnesses near the end seemed a bit convenient but not unbelievable necessarily. A serial killer like this seems a fantasy - I donā€™t think the human mind has managed to balance being ā€˜moral and murderousā€™.

Showā€™nā€™tell: šŸ‘Œ
Show and tell exactly how I like it. Tell me when itā€™s necessary, otherwise show me everything. Like a captivating kindergarten session where you go home and play school after.

Reading Journey: šŸ‘
Meandering evening summer drive alone with the windows down

Great match if you like:
-literary fiction vibes with a side of thriller/suspense from false accustion
-exploring complexities of growing up, families, relationships, friendships, and grief
-character study from childhood to adulthood
-antihero elements (havenā€™t we all pondered if we could act on ā€œI could just kill ___ā€ if we knew weā€™d get away with it?)
-thought-provoking discussion points on morality and what to do with incurable abusers
-legal thriller elements (defendant focus)

Vibes: šŸ„°šŸ«¢šŸ„³

Format: Library E-book via Libby

I have never read anything like this nor do I think I will ever read anything like this again. The writing, the plot, the characters and their development, are all incredibly planned out and impeccably portrayed. Sascha Rothchild has written a book so clever, so intriguing and intellectual but also so precarious and multi dimensional, it is unparalleled.

"Blood Sugar" is nothing short of profound and extraordinary.

I've never felt more in sync with a character which I ADORE immensely like I did with Ruby in this book. This book was very reflective, and it held all the right emotions which I did NOT expect coming into the book.

It felt very wholesome and apart from the 3 dead people, the rest of the characters are a joy to get to know more about!

Ruby is a character that has so much depth and is just as real and raw as any therapists I've read in books before. Whatever perfect notion you had before about a therapist, just throw it out the window. Yes Ruby murdered 3 people in her lifetime but... is she a bad person...? I vote no šŸ˜‰

Blood Sugar follows Ruby who is a woman that is accused of the murder of four people, including her husband. The problem is that she only murdered three people.
Oh I really liked this book. I picked this up on a whim when I saw Katie from Katie Colson speaking about it on YouTube and was really intrigued by the premise. This book did not disappoint.
First off, I really liked Ruby in this book. I know she's a killer but she was a really likable main character. She was clearly reasonable and smart and her motives for killing were intriguing to read about. Murder is never a good thing but the writer did a great job laying out why Ruby committed the crimes that she did.
I really enjoyed the writing in this book. It is very straight forward and to the point which I really liked. The writer of this book has previously written for TV and you can see that in the way she writes about how things happen. I think that this writing style really worked though both for the character and the story. I really liked it and found it easy to fall into and read quickly.
I thought the plot was really good in this as well. The way it jumped between the present where Ruby is being interrogated and the past where she speaks about her life and crimes was really well done. I cannot sing its praises enough.
The reason it gets four stars is two fold. First off, this book has diabetic rep in it. I am not a diabetic so I cannot speak to the accuracy but what I can speak on is that I wish there was more of it. Ruby's husband is a diabetic and one who has a real serious case of diabetes. I wish we had gotten more of that in this book. Second, I wish this had more of a thriller aspect of it. I pretty much guessed the twists before they happened and while I still enjoyed it, I wish there was more of a thrilling aspect. However, I do recognize this is the author's first book and I"m sure they will excel as they write more in bringing that aspect in.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. This is one I can see myself recommending and going back to time and again. I would highly recommend picking this up.

A really enjoyable read.  I loved the premise, which makes it different from many others in the genre. Rothchild does a great job of threading the needle of making Ruby a villain, without falling into the "therapists behaving badly" trope. Despite being a murderer, I couldn't help but to root for Ruby to clear her name of the one murder she didn't actually commit.  This is a perfect summertime read!
