Blood Sugar follows Ruby who is a woman that is accused of the murder of four people, including her husband. The problem is that she only murdered three people.
Oh I really liked this book. I picked this up on a whim when I saw Katie from Katie Colson speaking about it on YouTube and was really intrigued by the premise. This book did not disappoint.
First off, I really liked Ruby in this book. I know she's a killer but she was a really likable main character. She was clearly reasonable and smart and her motives for killing were intriguing to read about. Murder is never a good thing but the writer did a great job laying out why Ruby committed the crimes that she did.
I really enjoyed the writing in this book. It is very straight forward and to the point which I really liked. The writer of this book has previously written for TV and you can see that in the way she writes about how things happen. I think that this writing style really worked though both for the character and the story. I really liked it and found it easy to fall into and read quickly.
I thought the plot was really good in this as well. The way it jumped between the present where Ruby is being interrogated and the past where she speaks about her life and crimes was really well done. I cannot sing its praises enough.
The reason it gets four stars is two fold. First off, this book has diabetic rep in it. I am not a diabetic so I cannot speak to the accuracy but what I can speak on is that I wish there was more of it. Ruby's husband is a diabetic and one who has a real serious case of diabetes. I wish we had gotten more of that in this book. Second, I wish this had more of a thriller aspect of it. I pretty much guessed the twists before they happened and while I still enjoyed it, I wish there was more of a thrilling aspect. However, I do recognize this is the author's first book and I"m sure they will excel as they write more in bringing that aspect in.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. This is one I can see myself recommending and going back to time and again. I would highly recommend picking this up.
