Philippa Gregory is an extremely talented writer who can make her readers sympathize with the most heinous of characters. In this book, however, I felt that her characterizations were rather weak. I didn't really understand the characters or their motivations until the end of the book, and then, while I saw them, they didn't entirely make sense. While Richard remains a fairly steady character throughout the book, Anne's relationship with the members of her family seem to shift and sway over time. I couldn't always keep up with the changes in her opinions of other characters. Overall, I was disappointed.

I enjoy Phillipa Gregory's style of writing and Anne Neville is not a historical character I know much about other than as Richard's wife, so I found the book interesting and a relatively quick read. Unfortunately, I didn't find her very sympathetic as the main character, I wanted her to interact more so I could see how everyone else was reacting and have it be less about the main character.

I can't stop reading Philippa Gregory books no matter how outrageous the premise. Entertaining, but nothing will ever touch The Other Boleyn Girl. Sorry, the Plantagenets aren't as sexy as the Tudors.

I really struggled to finish this Philippa Gregory novel, whereas usually I am up all night because I simply cannot put them down. It wasn't the writing being of a lesser quality, it was up to her usual high standard, it was more that I simply couldn't engage with the story or the characters of this particular novel.

Now that Elizabeth Woodville is the enemy I wish I could remember more of the motives Gregory gave for her actions in The White Queen. I can't wait to read The White Princess when it comes out. Hopefully it will last longer than 1485.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any who like Gregory's books or this period in history. After reading the white queen I got a little frustrated in the last half of the book with Anne and Richard's attitude towards Elizabeth but stuck with it and was happy I did. I like the portrayal of Richard particularly in this book and how he is not a bad guy, he's just making the hard decisions. The other perspective of the war was very well done I think. My only issue is that, like with her other books, it seems like most of the action is off screen. However that comes with stories being in this period where women ruled behind the scenes rather then at the face of the action. A good read over all, I want to read the rest of the books in this series.

Frothy and fun, with interesting depiction of the rise of Richard III, on the side.

I had a hard time getting through this book. I feel like Anne was portrayed very coldly, without much personality. I didn’t believe her love for her family or her desire to be queen. It didn’t flow great and was choppy. Maybe all due to there not being a lot of information about her?
