WOW! I knew Kate was a goddess of words after In a Jam but she is also the goddess of banter now. This one starts out with banter and doesn’t stop. Brother’s best friend with some age gap and throws in small town life with a fancy oyster restaurant and a vegan cafe, with all the side characters as well. This is one of those books that even though it's almost 500 pages you can’t get enough of- like I’m going to need Dex soon!

Beckett is another book boyfriend for the ages - old growth tights, is about to get the whole wine list so she has her favorite, and so many other wonderful nuggets with him! Sunny is well sunshine but you throw in a hot older man that decapitated her little ponies she goes hard after ya. Loved these two and couldn’t get enough!!

Without giving too much away this is another winner of the year! For me it hit all the right things with some wonderful quotes I will be using from now on- hot AF tights- old growth, us and our bags of trauma- reusable grocery bags. I can’t wait for more of this series!!

Love me some enemies to lovers / brother's best friend/ opposites attract romance.

The romance was cute and very steamy which I adored.

The small town and side characters were delightful.

All the legal battles and the whole mess with his parents was very intriguing and I hope we can get more answers about that in the next book.

I just think it was a tad longer than it needed.

Pining.
Sexy, sexy pining.
I was horny in the BEST way for more of this book.

This is brother‘s best friend done so well and such a different way that it almost didn’t even feel like brother‘s best friend. I think that is probably why I loved it so much. The fact that it wasn’t heavy-handed, it wasn’t in your face and it wasn’t painful. Also, the interactions around her brother finding out were handled so well by both MCs that it felt authentic to how I would respond, personally.

It took me longer than I expected to see the parallels between Noah and Beck. Not to say that they are the same character in different fonts. It wasn’t really until the final conversation at the SPOC bar with Noah being his beautiful brooding self - of course, Noah is sitting at the bar drinking his beer, whilst Shane is having oysters and cheese and wine and whatever with her friends. Like, if Noah wasn’t there, it would feel so disingenuous and inauthentic - but I felt like, sure, there were some similarities in their situations, but they def weren’t the same character in different fonts. Yes, they are both fixer, and yes, they both came back to small towns to solve problems, it felt very different at a cellular level.
But, also, if they don’t become best friends, I am going to throw my phone in the ocean. If Daddy Bread Maker and Daddy Oyster Shucker don’t become best friends, I’m coming for you, Kate. I’m coming for you.

Not for nothing, and not even as a throwaway comment, but the banter in this book is SO FUCKING AMAZING.

Also, the extended Epi is the best Epi I have read in a long, long time.

~~~~~~
On vibes alone, this is 700 stars. But if I want to take a deeper look into the story and the way that it was written, I get a little bit stuck on what feels to me like condescending and patronising behaviour by the FMC. Completely acknowledging the fact that MMC has so far to go in terms of emotional intelligence, the way that she spoke to him sometime is made me want to punch her in the throat. If I was in a relationship with someone who spoke to me like that in mind was like that I would leave them. That might not be a solid long-term solution, I think I would sit comfortably in a decision that I wouldn’t want to be with somebody who spoke to me like that, who lorded what they felt like was there advanced EQ in that didn’t feel supportive at all. But that could say more about me than that says about anything else. And I’m okay with that. Because daddy oyster shucker did have a long way to go, he still has a long way to go but then don’t we all?
Sadly this one wasn’t my favourite, I ended up DNF’ing at 80% as I just couldn’t connect with the characters or feel their connection. Feel like the banter was just too over the top and sadly not as good as In A Jam.
This was such a fun small-town romance! I loved being back in Friendship, Rhode Island, with its quirky cast of characters, some of whom we met in In a Jam. The grumpy sunshine dynamic between the two leads was great, and their banter kept me hooked the whole time.
One thing I really loved was how competent Beckett is. There’s something so swoon-worthy about a guy who just knows how to take care of everything, and that personality trait shined here. The small touch of mystery added a nice layer to the story without taking away from the romance. Overall, this was an enjoyable, cozy read, and I’ll definitely be picking up the next books in this series!
This was just not for me. I found both of the main characters annoying (especially Beckett). I did like some of the side characters. Idk just wasn't my cup of tea.
This book is *entertainment* y’all. From the very first pages, I was laughing at the hilarious circumstances surrounding Sunny and Beckett’s current situations. First, Sunny wins a dilapidated bait shop in a card game, and turns it into a vegan cafe with her best gal pals. Then Beckett comes home to rescue the family business from peril, to find a cutesy vegan cafe has taken up residence next to their oyster empire. It’s just another thorn in his side, and he doesn’t even recognize the annoyingly gorgeous owner, who happens to be his best friend’s little sister. Let the shenanigans ensue.
Kate Canterbary is a master at writing internal dialogue. I am obsessed with the way her characters experience things, and people, and how they explain them in their heads. It’s so real and funny and I loved every second of this book. Beckett and Sunny have some of the best banter I’ve read in contemporary romance. Especially because Beckett gets warm and tingly the more vicious Sunny becomes. But the way they love each other is so so soft, and their relationship is so supportive and encouraging.
I honestly can’t even write enough praise for this book and its characters. This is a must read for fans of contemporary romance, especially small town romance featuring goofy characters with lots of heart.
Arc Review (thank you Kate Canterbury!) | 4.25 stars
I absolutely adored this book!! My absolute favorite tropes are enemies to lovers and brother’s best friend, so I was expecting to like it. I didn’t realize how much I would love it! I loved the chaotic small town of Friendship. It reminded me of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls, especially with the town’s love of random festivals! I also really enjoyed all the side characters that the small town gave us and how much they collectively loved Sunny!
Sunny and Beckett were so adorable! I really enjoyed their relationship, especially the tension, build-up, and their chemistry. I loved the dual POV as it gave us the opportunity to know and understand both character’s feelings.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! If you’re a fan of small town rom-com vibes with some spice and a lot of chaos, I think you would enjoy this book! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and go back to Friendship, PA!
