This felt like the lazy novelization of a rambling, listless Call of Cthulhu RPG campaign whose GM was a raving racist. With TWO antagonists as interesting as a monomaniacal, petty-noble hypnotist and a shape-shifting, millennium-old serpent-woman, one would have expected a little more...I don't know...SUSPENSE. Even the romantic subplot was blah; I think the protagonist was made of LITERAL cardboard. Props where given: there is an explosion in the last chapter, but that payoff is hardly worth the invested time. :(

The lesson we learn from this book is: If, every time a certain gentleman calls, and you invite him in for tea, he engages you in a hypnotic battle, otherwise known as a staring contest of evil. STOP INVITING HIM IN FOR TEA.

Also I'm fairly sure the recent Netflix series "Hemlock Grove" is at least loosely based on this book. Fun to read, but kind of ridiculous in its characters' insistence on propriety, even when their lives are obviously at stake.

"She has the strength and impregnability of a diplodocus."

Really should have searched for Bram Stoker's "second 'best' book" instead of "second most famous book."

I like cheesy old horror stories, and I am inclined to be kind to the author of Dracula, but sheesh. I read the shortened version of this novel, so there is a chance that the many, many things that made no sense in this book are better resolved in the fuller account, but I am not sure it would help much.

I gave this one two stars, not one, because of the wonderfully cheesy plot and the melodramatic speeches. When Edgar Caswell goes full-on megalomaniac, I could not help but hear Vincent Price expounding. And it was quite the gooey, gory ending. Other than that, though ... this book is not very good.

I enjoyed the read but there are several overtly racist comments in the story. Just a heads up to anyone who is thinking of reading this.
