Thirteen reasons why, is a powerful book that portrays the identity struggles dealt with as a young adult beautifully. As adults I think we tend to forget how hard it was to be a teen. Reading this book made me revisit some of these issues and I walked away a better person because of it.

This is not a book for the suicidal, it is a book for those who have lost someone to suicide. The plot has the main character attempt to make sense of a recent suicide and everything lends itself to characterization of the main character. It does not go out of its way to convince those who feel suicidal not to commit to it. This book has assumed that the suicide has already happened and moves on from there.

This book is devastating but in a very relatable ans realistic way. Asher truly understands how to portray complex emotions and the complications of high school life. Hannah's descent is so clear and yet happens in the blink of an eye. Amazing book, would recommend.

Two weeks after Hannah Baker commits suicide, her classmate and one-time crush Clay Jensen receives a box of cassette tapes in the mail, tapes Hannah sent out the day she died. Clay puts in the first tape, and hears Hannah's voice:

"I hope you're ready because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why."

Hannah goes on to give two instructions: everyone has to listen, and everyone has to pass the tapes on to the next person on the list. "Hopefully," she adds, "neither one will be easy for you."

And it isn't.

I have extremely mixed emotions about this novel. That's partly reflected in the fact that it's taken me years to read it. I've had this book on my shelf for about 10 years and finally started reading it last year after the TV show released so that I could be more knowledgeable about it should middle school families ask me about it. But, I put it down so many times in the midst of reading, I've just finished it now... The mix of reactions includes frustration, appreciation, sadness, anger, and overall questioning about the way the characters act and do or don't help themselves and each other. The novel does do an excellent job of relaying warning signs of suicidal ideations, I personally had a difficult time not being completely frustrated with the characters and that detracted from being able to appreciate the way the author was trying to both tell a compelling story and be of use to opening up a conversation about depression, bystanderism, support, and suicide. I have not yet made a decision as to if I'll watch the TV show....
