The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning – Browning has a knack for getting hold of creepy stories and making them his own! Happy Reading!

I honestly have no thoughts on this (legit my review on GR is empty haha). I didn’t expect the writing to be …not so simple (read as: convoluted), but considering its first published in 1842 then most probably it’s because I’m just not used to the almost-archaic language. I’m so used to the more simpler storyline that reading this edition felt like it went on a bit longer than I expected.

Wow, this has a harsh ending. Maybe I don't remember the story, but I thought the kids came back. Not in this one. If you have kids who are terrified of losing their parents, I would suggest skipping this story. I hope the townsfolk fire the mayor after his greed lost the town their kids.
At least the kids went to a heaven like place. The Pied Piper is pretty cold. This is a dark story. The nephew did like this story anyway. He gave it 4 stars. He thought the rats following the piper was cool.

In spite of having heard this story told many times, I don't think I have actually read any version.
Browning's verse is clever--and the wordplay is much more obvious when read out loud. And the illustrations in this Everyman Library edition are darling. Classic, lovely, and they capture the innocence of the children as well as the arrogance of the mayor and his council.
I just love Everyman's Library Children's Classics.

I had no idea this was completely in verse but it was a lovely and creepy children's legend with the moral of keeping promises. I knew the gist of it but I liked the process and the theme that it explores.

I first happened upon this story watching an old black and white Mickey Mouse feature in Netflix. The irony of Mickey being a Mouse who got rid of rats in a town was not lost on me. 😉
This version is obviously much more classic and Kate Greenway’s gorgeous wood cutouts are the perfect touch to this wonderful story of the most extraordinary exterminator. If only it could be that pleasant in real life.
