Maya Angelou had a WILD and ROUGH childhood. The book that prompted me to read this says: "Angelou evokes the harshness of black southern life with also recalling good times and bringing to life the people who played a role in her early years." I couldn't have said it better myself! I also really like Angelou's writing style and metaphors/similes to tell her story to the world. There are quite a few uncomfortable moments throughout the book, however I think it's still a very important read!

Last time I read this was back in high school and I didn’t realize the impact of Maya’s story. She is a wordsmith and how she describes things blows my mind that she could word it in a way that I understand exactly what she means. I particularly liked listening to the audiobook because it was Maya herself voicing it and I could listen to her voice for days. Just know there are some trigger warnings before reading around rape.

Very beautiful and poetic despite there being some traumatising explicit experiences.

This book is one of its kind as a literary autobiography. As it’s a coming of age story, the chapters  seem more like short stories. I found myself getting lost in the detail and so found it harder to be absorbed in the story.

Quotes I found wonderful were:
‘One girl, whose name and face have melted into the years’
‘He was forever dropping slangy terms into his sentences like dumplings in a pot’
‘Bailey was the greatest person in the world. And the fact that he was my brother, my only brother, and I had no sisters to share him with, was such a good fortune that it made me want to live a Christian life just to show God that I was grateful.’
