Honestly mixed feelings abt this. I have to say I love the concept. But the affair, the abortion (how easily they handle it) and also that father have a bit feelings toward his daughter in law just make me uncomfortable.

What saved me is Yasunari's writing style. I love how I need to guess what the meaning between the lines is. Every word he produced has layers. Gonna read more of his works.

Could not get into it at all. Made it halfway through and still no idea what was going on. Very, very slow. It bored me.

It is a beautiful novel that portrays Japan and the Japanese family in the 1950s. It is a poetic book full of symbolism that addresses current themes such as aging, adultery, and the relationships between human beings and the family.
