Loved this book! It was so easy to read and so enjoyable. I loved the main characters. The video-game, techy world is new to me and not something I’d normally read about. I loved the style of writing. I have no complaints. I will look up some other books by this author and try them out!

I have to be honest in that I was a bit bored by this book. I understand what it was going for but I ultimately felt very disinterested in any of the characters other than Marx. Perhaps that was the point? I’m not sure. I did, however, like the game references and differences portrayed between Sadie and Sam as they grow up and together. Mostly I just felt very sad for these characters who could have solved a lot of their problems by actually just talking to each other instead of hiding their issues.

Sadie and Sam are childhood friends that reconnect designing video games with each other. They met when they were young. Sadie’s sister was in the hospital for cancer treatment and Sam was there recovering from a devastating car accident that severely injured his foot and killed his mother. They bond over gaming but eventually lose touch after a falling out and misunderstanding. They run into each other in college and find they still have the same passion for games. They create a video game called Ichigo which is a massive success. With help from their friend Marx they forge a successful business, fall in love and come of age.

This book is about relationships, friendship and family. It will make you smile, laugh, cry and will fill you with nostalgia for the golden age of video games. I loved all the nods to literature in this story as well. Gabrielle Zevin is known for writing characters that will stay with you for a long time, and this story is no different.

enjoyed this a lot, especially the “NPC” chapter, which I think might be the best chapter of a book I’ve ever read. felt a lot of emotions but didn’t really understand a lot of the decisions the characters made, especially Sadie. left me wanting to know more idk.

I love this book! I found the way it told the story of the friends to be beautiful, as someone who’s had a sting, platonic working and creative friendship this book really hit the nail on the head. The way it skipped back in time to inform you of why characters were reacting to events the way they were was very refreshing. I would recommend this book to nearly everyone, gamer or not.

By all accounts this should be a book I loved but I just...did not. I couldn't get sucked into it and this was my second attempt to do that.
