If Shelby Mahurin wrote Bridgerton for the SJM girlies who grew up on PotC

Listen, you get what you come for and YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE AND GIGGLE OVER IT, OK?

This is how you do Romantasy to entertain!!

It's also feminist and I looooved a blood witch having to use her period blood!

I listened to this while sick with a fever or smth, but truly you could feel this was a debut and still a delight of a YA book!

A few years ago I dnf'd "A Deal with the elf king" cause I couldn't warm up on it, but I actually think bc I wanted it to be this.
Perfect for Fans of Holly Black and Victoria Aveyard.

For my taste a little fastpaced usually, but it still felt so... like a fairytale for grownups in the best way.

Can't wait to read more of this authors work and really hope for something darker by her!

Sooo.
I'm kinda sad I only listened to this as entertaining while sick in bed.

After I had it on my wishlist for a long time and almost accidentaly ordered it twice based of an arc Review AND a coworker saying this is close to dethroning ToG for her, I was so excited for this.

And in the beginning I thought this was gonna be a year-highlight.

Don't get me wrong, I loved it!!
But in the end, there was some emotional connection missing for me. This could be entirely based on my state of mind atm, so I am really excited to read the next book(s) and will recommend this to anyone who'll listen.

This is just every Romantasy of the last 2 decades smashed together hoping you've read enough of them to engage in the characters but not all of them so you get annoyed.

No characterbuilding, rarely any worldbuilding (it's not the thrown in figure it out fun way...).
Really if you've read anything along the lines of Chakrobaty, Sanderson, Maas, Bardugo, Tahir etc, this will be underwhelming.
I am well aware no idea can be really original anymore, but this brings NOTHING New to the table, not even in characters...

Alltho I liked the non-trad plotstructure, the pacing was wayyyyy to uneven, how do you skip a battle in 2 sentences but have more than a Dozen political blow-ups. It makes you lose any sense of scale or stakes.

I probably will read on tho bc I want to see this author learn and grow, she has so much potential if she just focused on her *own* World and characters and ideas.

After getting into it, it was entertaining enough to listen to while being sick.

Listen, I liked it well enough when I was listening, but there was nothing compelling me to pick it up again once I stopped and I just rather spend my time with books I adore more and want to sink into :)
I'm kinda sad about it atm, maybe I'll pick it up once more later, bc I really like the premise and slow pace, it could be a fav!
